Manitoba Medical Students Rural Interest Group
The Manitoba Medical Students’ Rural Interest Group (MMSRIG) is an interest group with a lengthy name but a simple mandate. Fondly nicknamed “the RIG”, by its members, its main mandate is to promote the practice of rural medicine to medical students and to support and encourage rural students interested in studying medicine.
The RIG also endeavors to increase its members’ awareness of rural issues. Membership is open to all registered University of Manitoba medical students and any physicians interested in supporting the group. RIG members participate in a variety of activities throughout the year and are registered to vote in the yearly executive elections. Funding for the majority of the RIG projects comes from the generous support of Manitoba Health.
The RIG also makes presentations to various rural high schools to promote medicine as a career option. Plans are also in the works to have guest speakers from different regional health authorities come and speak to the medical students about available opportunities and incentives regarding a career in rural medicine.
