- Job shadowing will allow you to really explore careers and/or opportunities that may interest you.
- By "shadowing", you get a first-hand, insider's look into what a job involves.
- Witness the range of duties and responsibilities that come with holding a specific career.
- Spend some time "in the shoes" of a health care professional.
- Gain a reasonable understanding as to what a job is and what it is not.
- Before choosing a career path, a job shadow may help determine whether the activities, working conditions, salary and benefits meet your expectations.
- Learn as much as possible from people working in a career in which you have expressed an interest.
- Shadowed persons can share the benefits and challenges of their position.
- Remember that you will be an observer and your goal is to see what the profession involves and how health care professionals interact with others in their work environment.

During a job shadow you will:
- identify your career interests
- observe the daily routine of health care staff in a variety of positions
- develop and apply communication skills by interacting with and interviewing staff
- begin to understand the connection between school, work and achieving goals
- develop an awareness of career options
- develop employability skills and understand the relevance of such skills to the workplace
- create a connection to the health care field
- gain experience to make smart career choices in the future
- develop a work ethic and professional behavior
The ORNH can help arrange suitable opportunities and provide rural, remote or northern Manitoba high school & post- secondary students with realistic insight into health care careers.
Criteria for Eligibility: Job shadowing arranged through the ORNH is geared towards students currently attending a secondary school that is located in rural or northern Manitoba, or students attending a post-secondary school that originate from a rural, remote of northern region of Manitoba.
This includes schools located in the following Manitoba Regional Health Authorities: Assiniboine, Brandon, Burntwood, Central, Churchill, Interlake, North Eastman, Nor-Man, Parkland, and South Eastman.
Factors beyond the control of the ORNH may limit availability and scheduling.
