The Nurses Recruitment and Retention Fund was established to support one-time funding costs for specific strategies or initiatives to attract and keep Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Registered Psychiatric Nurses in Manitoba, and to promote nursing as a profession. National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation and the Canadian Medical Foundation to aid Aboriginal medical school students
Aboriginal students studying for a medical degree now have the opportunity to secure further funding through a new partnership with the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation (NAAF) and the Canadian Medical Foundation (CMF). First Nation, Inuit and Métis students enrolled full-time at a Canadian medical school studying for a medical degree are eligible for 11 bursaries each earmarked for $5000 over 3 years.

Manitoba Student Aid

Several forms of assistance are available to Aboriginal students to help with the cost of post-secondary education. Students may be eligible for loans, grants and bursaries from the federal and provincial governments. Loans will need to be paid back once school is finished. Bursaries and scholarships are not paid back. Students may qualify for a bursary if their financial need is high or for a scholarship if they have good grades. Students may still qualify for financial assistance from Student Aid if they have other funding such as Band funding or Métis funding.Prince of Wales/Princess Anne Awards (Provincial)
$200 per year is available if you are a Canadian Aboriginal student studying full-time in Manitoba (or a program elsewhere in Canada not available in Manitoba) and have been assessed with a least $1 of financial need. Students are automatically assessed for this award when they fill out a student loan application and declare their Aboriginal ancestry.Millennium Manitoba Opportunity Grants For Independent Aboriginal students
The Government of Manitoba and the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation provide this grant for independent aboriginal students in the first year of a multi-year post-secondary educational program. This grant covers tuition costs up to $4,000 or assessed need, whichever is less. Provides bursaries to students selected by an ACCESS Program. If eligible, students receive the maximum allowed in a Canada Student Loan and the balance of need in ACCESS bursaries. There are no Manitoba Student loans with ACCESS bursaries. Total financial need is met. Canada Student Loan (CSL) / Manitoba Student Loan (MSL)
$350 per week is available for qualifying students in full-time studies. That works out to $210 per week of CSL and $140 per week of MSL. Part-time Student Loans of up to $4,000 are available as well.Manitoba Bursary and the Canada Millennium Scholarship Bursary
Students are automatically considered for these awards which help reduce student loan debt when they apply for Canada Student Loans and Manitoba Student Loans. Awards will be applied directly to student loan debt.Contact Student Aid and ask about other grants available for students from low-income families, students with high needs, students with dependents or students with disabilities. Student Aid has an Aboriginal Liaison / Consultant that can provide detailed information about our services.
